Shopping Your Own Closet: Fall 2024 Trends

Shopping Your Own Closet: Fall 2024 Trends

What I found in my own closet

Living in the southern U.S., fall tends to arrive a bit later than in other regions. Now that I'm feeling the autumn vibes, I'm eager to refresh my wardrobe without breaking the bank. Here's my tip: Shop your own closet!  Before you rush to the store or start clicking away on online shops, consider the treasures already in your closet. Shopping your own closet is not only a sustainable and cost-effective approach, but it also allows you to rediscover pieces you love and give them a new life. Here’s how you can embrace fall 2024 trends by shopping your own closet.

Step 1: Evaluate and Organize

Start by taking inventory of your closet. Pull out all your clothing and accessories and evaluate each piece. Sort items into categories: keep, alter, donate, and store. This step helps you see what you have and identify pieces that can be reworked to fit current trends. Organizing your closet makes it easier to mix and match outfits, ensuring you maximize your existing wardrobe.

Step 2: Identify Fall 2024 Trends

Before you start creating new outfits, familiarize yourself with the key trends for fall 2024. This season, expect to see a mix of classic and contemporary styles, with an emphasis on comfort and versatility. Check out our series on Fall 2024 Trends. Here is a little overview of a few trends to look out for:

American Classics: Think of timeless pieces like blazers, tailored trousers, and denim. These items are the foundation of a versatile wardrobe and can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion.  The cut, fit, and color of the jeans are important. I found a pair of high-waisted dark wash jeans with the tag still on them. They will look great with button shirts, turtlenecks, and sweaters this fall and winter.  If you are looking for a pair of high rise jeans try the Levi 725.

Rich Earthy Tones: Shades like camel, terracotta, olive green, and deep burgundy are in vogue. These colors are perfect for the fall season and can easily be integrated into your existing wardrobe. I love Vans sneakers and bought a two-tone burgundy pair a few years back. They go perfectly with my sweatsuit and this fall's color trend. The sweatsuit below is similar and has great reviews.

Leopard Print: Leopard print although a bold print is being hailed as a versatile neutral for Fall 2024. This print can be both playful and sophisticated, making it a perfect addition to your work wardrobe.  My closet is very limited when it comes to leopard print. I have a scarf and an umbrella. I was in need of a new hair bonnet and loungewear set.  I opted for leopard print!  I love them both.

Chunky Footwear: Chunky loafers and boots are making a statement this fall. They add an element of edge to any outfit while providing comfort. Why not grab a pair of loafers for fall in burgundy patent leather?  These loafers will truly elevate any look from jeans to trousers.

Layering: Combining different textures and layers is a key trend. Think about pairing a cozy knit sweater over a crisp white shirt or layering a dress with a turtleneck underneath. Southern weather can go from 47 degrees in the morning to 80 degrees in the afternoon.  This Hilfiger jacket is lightweight yet warm and can go from office to weekend casual without being too dressy or heavy.

Step 3: Mix and Match

With your closet organized and an understanding of current trends, start experimenting with different combinations. Here are some ideas to get you started:

Blazers and Denim: Pair a classic blazer with your favorite jeans for a chic yet casual look. Add a scarf in an earthy tone to tie the outfit together.

Layering: Use your existing turtlenecks and sweaters to create layered looks. Try a sweater over a dress or a denim jacket over a chunky knit sweater for added warmth and style.

Rich Earthy Tones: Incorporate these colors by mixing and matching existing pieces. For example, pair an olive green blouse with a camel skirt or layer a terracotta sweater over your favorite jeans.

Chunky Footwear: Pull out your chunky loafers or boots and pair them with dresses, skirts, or tailored trousers for a stylish and comfortable look.

Step 4: Accessorize and Beautify

Accessories and makeup can transform any outfit. Look for items in your collection that align with fall 2024 trends and colors. Scarves, hats, belts, purses, statement jewelry, and makeup can breathe new life into your existing wardrobe and overall look.  If you are looking for an amazing burgundy lip color that lasts all day. Get the liquid matte from The Lip Bar in Rebel.  I have a shoe box of press on nails.  I found these leopard and glitter nails in the box!

Step 5: Alter and Upcycle

Consider altering or upcycling pieces to fit current trends. A simple hem, new buttons, or new heel caps and a shoe shine can make an old piece feel new again. This not only extends the life of your clothing but also adds a personal touch to your wardrobe.
